30% Rise in the Housing Waiting List for County Durham Residents

The Local newspaper, the Northern Echo, has recently reported that there has been a rise of approximately 30% in the number County Durham residents that have joined the waiting list for housing in the past four years which means that the number of active applicants has increased from 7,686 2020 to 10,999 in 2024.

This greater demand for social housing, combined with fewer properties available, has meant that the waiting times for social houses have grown significantly in this area adding to the  nationwide housing crisis.

Councillor James Rowlandson, cabinet member for resources, investment and assets, said: “Alongside a rising cost of living, higher house prices and increasing rents, we’re faced with a national housing crisis that must be addressed to ensure that everyone has access to appropriate housing and the right support.”

As part of the consultation, the council is seeking views on six key issues.

These include: the criteria to access the housing register, better use of social housing stock, local lettings policies, how best to prioritise people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, the priority given to medical and domestic abuse cases, and monitoring and service standards.

We are proud that at Readylet properties we are taking run down properties and refurbishing them to a good lettable standard, helping to increase the number of properties suitable for letting in accordance with the local Durham Decent Homes standard and Selective Licensing standards where necessary.

All of the properties we sell are in areas of high rental demand and achieve excellent gross rental yields of around 10%, meaning that landlords can achieve good returns while helping with the housing crisis in the area.
