The A1 is a critical part of both the national and local road network and £220m of upgrades are underway to improve the most congested sections of highway in the North East.
Minister for Roads, Buses and Places, Baroness Vere of Norbiton said: “Investing in infrastructure is at the heart of this Government’s plans to build back better and level up the North, so it’s fantastic to see works underway on the A1 and improvements on the A19 finishing early.
“Both these schemes will bring a wealth of benefits to communities and businesses in the North East by boosting capacity, cutting congestion and ensuring better journeys across the region.”
National Highways chief executive Nick Harris said: “We pride ourselves on managing and improving England’s motorways and major A roads to make journeys safer, smoother and more reliable, as we deliver the Government’s strategic roads investment programme.
“The A1 and the A19 are extremely important routes and these improvements, amongst the many others projects we’ve done - and are continuing to do in the region - will provide better, safer journeys and connections for our road users.”
These schemes are part of a series of improvements along the A19 and A1, amounting to an estimated £560 million worth of investment, which have either recently been completed or are on the ground.
National Highways will also introduce electronic signage to provide driver information along the road.
The upgrade, which is due to open to traffic in Spring 2025, is being delivered by Costain Jacobs Partnership.
Tim Gamon, regional delivery director for Highways England in Yorkshire and the North East, added: “We’re delighted to be working with Costain and Jacobs on these two major upgrades, both of which will be a massive boost for the region’s economy, creating jobs during construction and assisting the region’s future growth.
“They will also increase capacity along the existing carriageway, meaning safer, smoother, more reliable journeys for thousands of people using these sections of the A1 every day. Bringing a wealth of expertise to our latest schemes, we look forward to working with them to progress both for the wider benefit of the region.”
Malcolm Bell, programme director at Costain, said: “These critical projects are supporting the region’s economy by improving traffic flow, connecting businesses and communities.”
